ER star Goran Visnjic has sponsored a dog to help clear mine fields in his native Croatia.

The 29-year-old, who plays Dr Luka Kovac, gave over pounds 9,500 to pay for the dog's special training.

The dog's trainer Branimir Djurdjevic told Croatian paper Vecernji List: "Visnjic often called me up from America during Gero's training period to see how he was doing. I also sent him lots of photos."

It is estimated that up to 13,000 square kilometers of land was contaminated with over one million land mines laid during the Balkans War in the '90s.

Visnjic said earlier this year that he was determined to help out his country in any way he could and that sponsoring a land mine dog was "only one of the ways" he intended to do this.
